Who we are
This post is also available in: Français (French)
We are Laure and Simon, the French-American couple behind A Journey Away. We met back in the winter of 2012, in Paris where Laure was studying translation, as Simon was traveling the world. He stopped in France for a while but never forgot about his dream to backpack through Asia.
That’s how, after several short trips together, we went on a one-of-a-kind adventure and hit the road for 6 months through Asia. This great experience led to more changes in our lives, as we have now settled in Texas.
This blog is fueled by our love for discovering new places, whether it is for short holidays, long-term travel or expat life. We hope that you will find the ideas and inspiration that you are looking for.
Laure
29, French (and a bit British and American in my heart too), travel lover, translator and travel writer
A challenge when travelling: keep being vegetarian (no meat, no chicken… because apparently chicken doesn’t count as meat in some countries…)
My first boundary-breaking experience abroad: Jamaica. As tourists, I was very surprised at how locals were considering us (nothing more than walking wallets). I felt like it was impossible to have a genuine connection with them.
The countries I have already been to: UK, USA (Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii), Jamaica, Germany, Tunisia, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka
How I got the travel bug: I spent a year in England in 2011, in a family as an au pair and absolutely loved living abroad, discovering new sceneries and meeting new people
One last word? “happiness is a habit to grow”
Simon
32, American, front-end developer
A challenge when travelling: I’m someone who thrives on routine, so when taken out of my element I tend to get a bit disoriented
My first boundary-breaking experience abroad: in Italy, trash doesnt always just get picked up at regular intervals… so dont forget to pay the mob!
The countries I have already been to: France, Italy, Spain, Scotland, Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka
How I got the travel bug: honestly, I was just tired of being surrounded by a culture that I never truly identified with.
One last word? “You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.” Homer Simpson
