Who knew you can go on a safari in Sri Lanka?! Certainly not us until we started designing our itinerary in the country. Simon had mentioned before that the first thing he would want to do in Africa if we ever go would be a safari. So when I found out that it was also a thing a Sri Lanka, I knew it would be part of our adventures.
A little while ago, I was sharing here several ideas of unusual things to do in Paris. Although they are fairly famous, Paris covered passages could complete this list since they are usually not part of what you will visit on a first visit of our French capital. I lived in Paris for just over two years for my studies but it was only during a recent trip to visit a friend after eight months away from France that I finally saw some of them.
Phuket is one of the paradise places we were lucky to visit. The week we spent there was filled with food discoveries, beach time and we loved the quiet Rawai area where we were staying. Although we did spend most of the time exploring the South of the island, we decided to take a day to drive up North a bit to visit Old Phuket town. You don’t need a lot of time to see the heart of the little town but the streets are all so cute that I was not disappointed.
Kandy is an important city in Sri Lanka and we didn’t want to miss it. As well as being a perfect starting point for a beautiful train ride to Ella, Kandy has a lot to offer culture wise. With two weeks in the country though, big cities were not our priority. We had only one full day in Kandy and made the most of it.
Las Vegas is full of things to do and see, but as much as I love it, such a busy city can be a bit stressful and you can feel like escaping all the hustle and bustle. Vegas being in the middle of a desert, you can already see all the beautiful mountains surrounding it without leaving. Nature lovers like me will find it very easy to drive to a quieter place.
When we were trying to come up with an itinerary for Thailand, we quickly decided we would spend most of our month there on some of the famous Thai islands. Phuket had always appeared to me as a dream destination and that’s where he headed after a few days in gloomy Bangkok and lovely Chiang Mai.
I’m more of an outdoor person and I don’t usually like big cities and crowded places, so Las Vegas never appeared to me as an obvious destination. I didn’t think I would enjoy all the noise, lights, sparkles and superficiality I imagined. When we first visited Simon’s sister who has settled there though, I loved it. To be honest, being with an insider helped a lot and we would definitely have had a different experience and not as much fun without Heidi.
Mirissa is a very pretty area in the South of Sri Lanka. Let’s be honest, there is not much more to do there than relax on the beach unless you’re willing to drive away from the little town. As much as we loved Mirissa, its beach and its atmosphere, we were also happy to go explore the area.
Ella is by far our favourite Sri Lankan destination. We loved its cool weather, lush greenery and peacefulness and we were lucky enough to pick a fantastic guest house. We are strong believers that the accommodation you choose plays an important part in the way you are going to feel about a destination. The Villa Eden Paradise was one of the best places we stayed at throughout our travels. In addition to being located only a few minutes of walk away from the train station and the town’s main street, it was surrounded by vegetation, giving the feeling that it was secluded. Our welcoming and caring host also did everything he could to make our stay better.
Koh Phi Phi is composed of several islands among which Koh Phi Phi Leh, a small uninhabited islet, home to Leonardo DiCaprio’s famous Beach. Touring Koh Phi Phi Leh has become a major attraction since the film was released in 2000. This island features paradise beaches, clear waters and a dreamy lagoon. Its beauty is simply breathtaking.
